LONG HORNS – The interesting life history of an insect, in the sense that because the bodies of insects are enclosed within a firm exoskeleton, the only way they can grow is by moulting. A new layer of exoskeleton expands and hardens, allowing insects to grow in stages.
There are two very different life cycle patterns different insects follow, the incomplete metamorphosis cycle (egg →nymph →adult) and the complete metamorphosis cycle (egg →Larva →pupa → adult).
The Beetle family goes through complete metamorphosis life cycle, yet certain Beetle families such as the Longhorn Beetles and Jewel Beetles take many years to complete their development.
The immature Jewel Beetle for example, can take up to 35 years to develop. Once developed it is relatively short lived. Another example is that certain species of the Longhorn beetle can also take up to 20 years to mature! This only goes to show that with age, comes beauty.
