The New Year has been a time for some of our team to move south over the open plains of Serengeti; getting our mobile camps into position for the arrival of the Great Migration. The wildebeest and zebra have headed to the short grass plains and woodlands of the southern Serengeti to calve, our mobile camps of Kusini and Kakessio being perfectly placed to see this incredible spectacle. The scale of these plains is unfathomable, endless false horizons with just the faintest outline of the Ngorongoro highlands to help navigate.
Tribal interactions with the Hadzabe and Masai, Datoga and the Wasekuma bring this ancient landscape to life. Walking the escarpment of Lake Eyasi, witnessing spectacular birdlife that follows in the wake of the herds – these seasonal camps are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of our usual lives. Take time to escape and breathe in these incredible wild spaces. To spend time here in January and experience the dramatic skies and beautiful sunshine has been a real morale boosting lift from the gloom of a European winter.

Serian Serengeti Lamai continues to astound. This truly is big cat country and arguably at its most brilliant in these early months of the year. The grassland savannahs are a bedazzling green, vast herds of topi antelope and zebra in their thousands have remained resident this year and with no other permanent camps open in this secret season – we have the Lamai wedge to ourselves. All of the wildlife – none of the traffic. Our walking safaris have been particularly immersive, learning about the entire landscape from the bedrock to the topmost leaves gives real clarity to these wild spaces.

In both Kenya and Tanzania – our exceptional guides have been brushing up on their skills with some superb training, we have been working closely with Mara Predator Project and the Hyena team and our work with Conservancy Guardians continues unbounded. Professional (and aspiring photographers) have been relishing these quieter months, with no fixed game drives and your own private vehicle with spotter and guide, being able to really take your time to get the perfect shot has been invaluable.
